Making a bootable USB drive off of Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS is fairly easy and there are even a lot of graphical tools available to do it. However, there is one silly mistake that slips in during the process of decompression, namely one of the files receives a wrong extension name. By searching thru the forums one post saved many, many hours of frustration for a lot us, which I am about to reblog for the Blogoshpere here.
Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin Server 64-bit:
1. Open the directory: “\pool\main\l\linux” on your USB drive
2. Rename the file:
“fs-secondary-modules-2.6.32-21-generic-di_2.6.32-21.32_amd64.ude”
to
“fs-secondary-modules-2.6.32-21-generic-di_2.6.32-21.32_amd64.udeb”
Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin Server 32-bit:
1. Open the directory: “\pool\main\l\linux” on your USB drive
2. Rename the file:
“fs-secondary-modules-2.6.32-21-generic-di_2.6.32-21.32_i386.ude”
to
“fs-secondary-modules-2.6.32-21-generic-di_2.6.32-21.32_i386.udeb“
UPDATE
For those who are using the tools from PendriveLinux.com, the issue has been made to be auto-corrected by the utils, which is a nifty little feat! 🙂
